Recently three Mission Travel Agents (Lisa, Alex & Natalie) left our shores to discover the amazing experience which is Kenya! Try as we may, to sum this up in one sentence is virtually impossible. A truly indescribable experience that was not only a fantastic trip to the projects of Limuru and a safari to The Mara, but an experience that touched our hearts in such a way that it can never be forgotten.
As we landed in Nairobi airport after our Kenya Airways flight, we were met by our local driver from ACTS (African Christian Tours & Safaris) and began the journey to our guesthouse hidden among the beautiful tea plantations in Limuru, about 1hour outside of Nairobi city.
Early morning start and off on the 5 hour drive to the Masai Mara, one of the most wonderful displays of God’s creation…a vast expanse of terrain covered in flora and fauna of all kinds. We saw giraffes, elephants, wildebeest, rhinos, hippos, lions, zebras, leopards (to name a few!) all in their natural habitat…and from the safety our safari vehicle driven by our Masai guides.
One of the most overwhelming parts of the trip was our visit to Kibera, one of the largest slums in Africa. The morning started with a visit to a Power Women, a support group for women suffering with HIV. We studied the bible, sang songs and chatted to 10 women all with the help of an interpreter...listening to their stories, their struggles and their strength was truly inspiring.
As one of our major partners for providing mission related travel, ACTS showed us many of their working projects – medical clinics, baby rescue centres, child orphanages, and environmental protection projects. Volunteers from all around the world are welcome to apply to do a placement in one of their projects – what a great way to travel and make a difference!
